TROJANS’ London 3 South-West derby clash with Eastleigh will have to be played again after the referee abandoned the match 15 minutes in.

The Dorset & Wilts official was on the end of an accidental blow when two players were involved in a minor scuffle.

As reported in yesterday’s Daily Echo, Phil Crossley brought the match to a halt and, without yellow or red carding any of the players involved, decided the game would end there and then and walked back to the dressing room.

Shocked and confused spectators from both sides slowly made their way back to the clubhouse.

The referee, who was being assessed at the time, refused to comment.

But Hampshire RFU disciplinary officer Gary Self said: “There was an altercation after the breakdown of play.

“There was a bit of pushing and shoving between two players and in the melee the referee was touched.

“The referee then decided he did not wish to continue with the game, which, of course, is his prerogative, and there will be a full inquiry into the matter.”

In the same league, New Milton kept a high quality Old Tonbridgians RFC at bay for 40 minutes but were overwhelmed by their visitors after the interval.

OTs scored a push over try and two backs’ tries, both converted, and Milton answered with Ben Russell touching down and Adam Lavis adding the extras.

Dave Simmons burst through the Surrey side’s defence in the second half but the Tonbridgians’ pack pushed over another three times and the backs added two more for a 54-14 victory.

Chris Conacher, playing a new position as fly half, was Milton’s man of the match.
