Mason Crane bowled himself into the Hampshire record books as Warwickshire were all out for just 125 at the Ageas Bowl.

Leg spinner Crane, who is 18 and 171 days, took 5-35 to become the youngest Hampshire player to take five wickets in a County Championship innings.

He beat Alex Kennedy’s 106-year record by 21 days.

Crane shared the Hampshire wickets with West Indian Fidel Edwards (5-32) as Hampshire secured a first-innings lead of 160.

He soon made up for dropping a catch at mid-on off the luckless Jackson Bird, bowling Warwickshire captain Varun Chopra with a well-disguised googly.

Four balls latter Crane added the scalp of another former Test star, with Jonathan Trott caught by James Vince for his second duck in a week against Hampshire.

Sam Hain and Tim Ambrose then departed in successive deliveries to leave Crane on a hat-trick – Hain caught behind while wicketkeeper Ambrose was leg before – to end a 20-ball spell of four wickets for six runs.

Edwards had taken the first Warwickshire wicket before lunch when Ian Westwood edged to Gareth Berg at fourth slip.

He cleaned up the tail in his second spell.

Rikki Clarke was lbw and Chris Woakes edged the last ball of the afternoon as Warwickshire lost their last nine wickets for just 47 runs.

Hampshire had 26 overs to boost their 160 run lead – after deciding against forcing the visitors to follow-on.

But they lost Jimmy Adams in the fourth over as he top edged a hook to Westwood at square leg.

Michael Carberry got away with a voracious caught behind appeal early on but reached 34 at the close – with captain James Vince also on 34 and the Hampshire lead up to 242.

In the morning, seamer Clarke saw off the stubborn Hampshire tail to bowl the hosts out for 285, after Gareth Berg scored his fourth fifty of the summer.

Berg reached a 73-ball half century with one of his five boundaries – which also brought up the 50 partnership with Crane – to continue his fine summer with both bat and ball following his winter move from Middlesex.

He mistimed a pull shot to Boyd Rankin at fine leg – soon after changing his bat – and Crane (13 from 68 balls) also fell to Clarke, prodding a short delivery to Trott at leg slip.

Edwards remained unbeaten on an entertaining 17 as the hosts missed out on a third bonus point by 15 runs.

But it turned out to be his and Crane's day.

“I’m a wicket taker but I didn’t expect to take five in my second game," admitted Crane. “It wasn’t doing loads but it was quite inconsistent, some were spinning more than others.

“If I don’t know what it is going to do off the pitch as a bowler then it’s going to be hard for the batters.

“It was really good to get Trott, he used to be my favourite player when he played for England. And I was also pleased with Chopra.

“It’s a good position to be in. We know it is really crucial to keep batting tomorrow and we get a lot of runs on the board and bowl them out.

“First-class cricket can easily change as we know from today.

“It’s quite handy with Fidey. He was forcing them back and he bowled really quick in great areas today.

“It helped me because the pressure was coming from both ends.

“Jackson and Bergy created great pressure before that and they didn’t really go over two an over and that really helped us.

“It was really great to be on top today so hopefully we can prolong it.”
