Yorkshire's bowlers held the upper hand on the second day of the LV=County Championship match against Hampshire at Headingley, despite a fighting knock of 97 from Michael Carberry.

Without his assistance they would have been in much deeper trouble at stumps when they were 223 for eight and still trailing by 147 on the first innings.

Hampshire were up against it from the start of their innings as Sean Terry was forced back on to his stumps and lbw to Tim Bresnan without scoring but by then Liam Dawson had already survived two slip chances off Jack Brooks.

He pulled the second ball of Brooks' first over for four and the next was put down by Jack Leaning low to his left at third slip. In his following over, Dawson edged a head high catch to Adam Lyth at second slip and that, also, was grounded.

There was soon another scare for Dawson when he narrowly avoided being run-out and Carberry helped him take Hampshire safely through to lunch at 21 for one in 14 difficult overs.

Accurate seam bowling on a helpful pitch continued to make life difficult for the visitors after the interval but the second wicket pair stuck to their task well with Carberry involved in a fascinating duel with Bresnan while progressing to 41 at which stage he had completed 12,000 first class runs.

The stand had reached 75 in 28 overs when it was ended by Will Rhodes who had kept his place in the side because of the suspension of Liam Plunkett as a disciplinary measure, this time Leaning holding on to Dawson at third slip.

Brooks returned for another spell and Carberry drove his first ball elegantly through the covers for four but in his next over Brooks struck with consecutive balls to leave Hampshire on 109 for four. James Vince was lbw offering no shot and Will Smith was caught by Lyth at second slip trying to remove his bat, his departure bringing Brooks his 250th first class wicket.

Much depended upon Carberry and Sean Ervine if Hampshire were to stage a decent revival and they batted attractively to put on 86 in 27 overs before both got themselves out.

Yorkshire still have sore memories of Carberry's triple century against them at the Rose Bowl in 2011 and he had move on serenely to 97 when he swept Adil Rashid straight into the hands of Cheteshwar Pujara at deep mid-wicket, his runs coming off 208 balls with 17 boundaries.

Ervine also perished in the next over from Brooks while attempting to reach his half-century. He pulled high to fine leg where Steven Patterson waited patiently for the ball to land in his hands and there were two further wickets for Rashid in the closing overs, Gareth Berg edging his leg-break to Lyth at slip and Andre Adams holing out to Andrew Gale.

Resuming the day on 333 for seven, Yorkshire were able to secure a fourth batting bonus point before being bowled out for 370, two of the wickets falling to Hampshire's most successful bowler, left-armer, James Tomlinson, who finished with four for 86 from 34 overs, ten of which were maidens.

He ended a stubborn eighth wicket stand of 64 in 30 overs between Leaning and Bresnan by getting Bresnan taken at gully by Smith for 28 and he then pinned Leaning lbw for 82 from 195 balls with ten boundaries of the highest quality.
