James Vince is determined to ensure he enjoys his England debut against Ireland next week.

The Hampshire star has been included in a youthful XI for the one-day international in Dublin on Friday.

And he is keen to give himself the best possible chance of playing in the series against New Zealand and Australia, which both include fixtures at The Ageas Bowl later this season (June 14 and September 3).

Vince said: “It’s a good opportunity for us all to show Peter Moores and the other coaches what we can do.

“I don’t know what they’ll look to do with the one-day side going forward but a good score in this game will do me no harm.

“Obviously I’d love to take the opportunity but I don’t want to heap too much pressure on myself and be a nervous wreck going out to bat so I’ll try and enjoy the day.

“You never know, it might be the only game I ever play for England so I’ll make sure I enjoy it.”

Vince’s call-up was celebrated in the Hampshire dressing room.

“Chalks (director of cricket Giles White) brought a couple of glasses of champagne into the dressing room,” revealed Vince, whose parents are likely to make the trip to Dublin for his graduation to full international honours. “I kept it quiet until it was finalised but told my mum and dad a few days ago. I was delighted when I got the call from James Whitaker, I’ve been waiting for an opportunity for a little while now.

“When I heard some of the England guys weren’t going to be playing it was in the back of my mind a little.

“I’ve scored a good amount of runs in the last couple of years and a good winter probably helped.”

Vince scored 261 runs at 130.5 in two drawn ‘Tests’ against South Africa A before captaining the England Lions to a 3-1 one-day series win.

“It was probably my first Lions tour where I’ve felt like I’ve played a good part and come away with the runs I wanted at the start of the tour,” he said. “So hopefully the time’s right and I get a game.”
