Former Hampshire star Matt Coles took a wicket on his Ageas Bowl return with Kent.

Coles, who was released by Hampshire midway through a three-year contract on his return from South Africa last month, is hoping to resurrect his career with his home county.

And he took the wicket of Hampshire debutant Jackson Bird when he got the chance to bowl in Hampshire’s last friendly of pre-season.

All-rounders Sean Ervine and Chris Wood both hit half centuries as Hampshire made 310.

Ervine (70) and Wood (53) top scored after openers Jimmy Adams (22) and Liam Dawson (32) departed in quick succession before lunch.

Will Smith (20) was bowled shortly after the interval but Gareth Berg made a useful 39 as Adam Riley impressed with his off-spin during the afternoon session. Adam Wheater (seven) and Tom Alsop (13) also batted.

Kent reached 73-0 at stumps in reply, with Jackson Bird bowling his first three overs in a Hampshire shirt. Andre Adams was off the field as Kent pair Daniel Bell-Drummond (39) and Joe Denly (29) impressed in reply.

Meanwhile, Hampshire are giving a trial to former Sussex II bowler Jordan Rollings, a 25-year-old seamer who has also played for MCC Young Cricketers.
