It’s all smiles at Trojans following news that they have secured London 3 South-West rugby for another season.

The last few weeks have proved a nailbiting and complicated end to a long, hard season with the Stoneham Lane club looking odds on to be relegated for the third season on the bounce.

The team’s battling spirit gave them four wins in recent games but those efforts looked to have come too late to make up for a poor start to the campaign.

It seemed third-from-bottom Trojans were doomed when New Milton won at the weekend, with recent indications that three teams would drop down a tier.

But a late RFU decision on the structuring of next season’s leagues, announced at the weekend, means Trojans stay in SW3.

Delighted chairman Shaun Magill said: “That news has come as a great relief.

“We want to stay in this league because we were just starting to put some results together and beat some teams near the top of the table.

“We have always had the belief we could stay up but it was just a matter of turning that into points on the park while trying to bring in some youth players and other players from outside.”

Judging by Trojans’ display on Saturday against Teddington, they are more than capable of playing their part in SW3 next term.

Trojans went ahead when wing Tom Stevenson went over in the corner after 13 minutes of even exchanges and fly half Dan Woods nailed a difficult conversion.

The London side came back with a couple of tries and a conversion before the hosts ended the half 14-12 up – Mark Greenhalgh getting the ball to ground among a heap of bodies.

The visitors got back in front with a third try and looked confident of taking a win back up the M3.

But they were hit with two late touch downs from Trojans’ captain Chris Hamp.

He sprinted under the posts following several phases of play on the half-way line and then brought up the bonus point, and denied Teddington a single losing point, by making the most of a fumble to touch down with the last play.

Hamp, said: “We won ugly, horrible, but we have built up a belief and we continue to the last play of the game.

“Teddington were messing about and going for a drop goal thinking they had won it but we got two late tries because we have the desire.”
