Former Hampshire duo Shane Watson and Glenn Maxwell batted Australia into the World Cup semi-finals as Shahid Afridi's Pakistan career ended in defeat.

The pair shared an unbroken stand of 68 from just 43 balls to guide Australia to a six-wicket win at the Adelaide Oval.

Watson made an unbeaten 64 (66 balls, seven fours, one six) after arriving at the crease with Australia 59-3, needing 214.

Maxwell's unbeaten 44 came from only 29 balls and included five fours and two sixes.

Together they ensured Australia reached their target with 16.1 overs to spare.

Only Kumar Sangakkara and AB De Villiers average more at this World Cup than Maxwell, who has scored 301 runs at 75.25.

And of the leading batsmen, only New Zealand's Brendon McCullum has a better strike-rate than his 183.53 runs per 100 balls.

Maxwell will be playing for Yorkshire in this season's T20 Blast, after representing Hampshire in 2012 and 2014.
