Another victory from mighty Millbrook – along with a favourable result in the New Forest – has changed the promotion picture in Snows Group Hampshire 1.

Brook trounced Petersfield 45-10 to move into second spot which offers a play-off place for London league rugby at the end of the season. But the Five Acres club will also be tipping their hat to Fordingbridge who beat Bognor and knocked them down to third. Top place has already been claimed by runaway leaders US Portsmouth.

Brook skipper Mike Randell said: “We had a few changes but it did not show; we defended well and were patient enough to build up a sufficient lead and then pushed on for the bonus point.”

Rich Colmer was the star man in the first half, scoring Brook’s opening ten points with a try, conversion and penalty. Colmer then put a clever kick in for winger Aaron Race to pounce on as he scooped in and dived over the line; Colmer converting.

Petersfield were in the game and competing with good ball retention, crashing over for a try themselves. However Brook still held a 17-5 half-time lead.

Millbrook’s back row combination of Mark Colmer and Tom Colling defended hard all afternoon, and with Colling impressing in an unfamiliar back row position, a second try came for Colmer. The fly half scooped up a loose ball and sprinted in after Colling’s tackle dislodged the ball from his opponent.

With Millbrook now in the driving seat, their skill level and fitness began to shine through, winger Mike Randell intercepted a pass to sprint in for a try before running in another two to complete his hat-trick.

Petersfield were able to pick up a try but it was little consolation as Millbrook dominated second half.

Randell added: “We still have a lot of work to do but we are taking the right steps towards it.”

Fordingbridge have been hit by injury and unavailability but they welcomed back Hampshire Under-20 captain Ben Kirby and former skipper Tim Brittan as well as Alex Tattersall for his first appearance of the season.

And Bridge, who travel to Andover next weekend in the semi-final of the Hampshire Bowl, put on a show in their last home game of the season, beating Bognor 47-21.

There was nothing between the sides over the first 40 minutes – Bridge turning around 15-14 up with a try from Dan Brown and Mat Norton, who also kicked five points.

However it was a different story in the second half.

Ben Kirby and Josh Merry extended their side’s lead before Bognor hit back with a try.

But the West Sussex side was being dominated by the cohesive home pack with the front row of Dave Timms, Craig Stocker and James Gwynne to the fore.

Bridge moved out of sight with a try from Chris Gogin, a second for Merry and another by Steve Brown. Norton took his personal tally to 17 with two more conversions and a penalty.
