Millbrook put in a below par performance but still managed victory at bottom side Alton as the three leading Snows Group Hampshire 1 clubs registered bonus point wins.

Newcomer Darren Leggott opened the scoring and Rich Colmer converted to put Brook 7-0 up, but through their own ill discipline and lack of intensity that is the way it stayed until half-time.

Winger Mike Randell scored a try out wide after the break before Alton applied a bit of pressure and moved the ball to dive over for an unconverted try.

The Millbrook forwards gained some momentum with 20 minutes to play and they soon used this to drive a maul over the line, hooker Jason Berry scoring his second try of the season.

Randell completed his brace and secured the bonus point when he went over with five minutes remaining, following a clever kick through from Tom Colling. With Rich Colmer converting all the second half tries Millbrook ended the game 28-5.

Skipper Randell said: “We never really got out of second gear. Not great in terms of putting together a strong performance but we still took the five-point win showing our ability to get the job done and achieve what we need to.”

Runaway Hampshire 1 leaders US Portsmouth were given a game by neighbours Fareham Heathens but still ran out 29-17 winners and second-placed Bognor won 38-19 against the Isle of Wight.

Romsey gave their relegation battle a boost when they closed the gap on opponents Farnborough with a 16-15 home win.
