Michael Carberry is hoping to become the third Hampshire player to appear in the Indian Premier League – and miss the start of the county season.

The IPL begins on April 8 – four days before Hampshire’s first game against Sussex – and does not end until May 24.

So Carberry will miss Hampshire’s first five matches back in the LV County Championship’s first division if an IPL franchise snaps him up at Monday’s auction.

The 34-year-old will be hoping that his success at the KFC Big Bash T20, where he made 266 runs at 44.3 as the Perth Scorchers successfully defended their title, will secure him a deal.

He is one of four English players believed to be in the IPL auction, alongside the World Cup trio of Eoin Morgan, Alex Hales and Ravi Bopara (his former Hampshire and England teammate Kevin Pietersen will be playing for the Delhi Daredevils).

This time last year, he also had hopes of being in England’s World Cup squad. But for Carberry, competitions like Big Bash and the IPL are the next best thing.

If successful, he will follow in the footsteps of former Hampshire duo Dimi Mascarenhas, who played at five IPLs from 2008-13, and Michael Lumb, who was at the IPL in 2010-11, before moving to Nottinghamshire, who do not allow their players to take part.

The auction takes place at the IRC Gardenia, Bengaluru and will be conducted by Englishman Richard Madley, a veteran of IPL auctions since the inaugural competition in 2008.

Ranjib Biswal, chairman of the IPL Governing Council, said. “The Franchises have returned to the drawing board, reworked plans and devised new strategies, over the previous few months. They will have the opportunity to bid for some of the biggest names in the game.”

Two years ago, Carberry’s former Hampshire teammate Glenn Maxwell became the IPL’s first $1m player when he was signed by the Mumbai Indians.
