JAMES Vince's maiden England Lions hundred, a heroic 152 not out, secured a draw against South Africa A.

The Hampshire star, who is set to be named as the Lions' one-day captain tomorrow, resumed on 61 this morning before reaching his 15th first-class ton from 196 balls, with 16 fours.

He had 152*, from 292 balls and including 22 fours and a six over mid-wicket, when hands were shaken on another draw.

When the final day began the Lions were 212 - a lead of just 51 – and Vince soon lost Jonny Bairstow, who fell to former Hampshire man Rory Kleinveldt in the seventh over of the morning.

But Adil Rashid (32) helped Vince add 81 for the sixth wicket.

And after losing Liam Punkett shortly after lunch, Vince and Durham seamer Mark Wood shared an unbroken 72 for the eighth wicket as the Lions reached 338-7, a lead of 242, to ensure the two-'Test' series finished in stalemate in Bloemfontein.

Jonathan Trott led the praise for Vince, who now has eight centuries from his last 24 first-class matches and is set to replace Trott as captain for the one-day series that starts on Sunday.

“I think James played fantastically well,” said Trott, who will now return home. “He came in with myself when we were about 100 runs behind, and to be able to bat for the amount of time he did in this heat and a bit of humidity as well is fantastic credit to him.

“He’s looked good in the last game as well, he’s been fantastic how he’s been able to apply himself here and score all around the wicket as well which is the key to being a successful international cricketer.

"I’ve always thought the future’s bright but this has just confirmed it. I haven’t seen James play for a while before this tour and it’s pleasing to see he’s developed into a fine cricketer.”
