Tottonians coach Gavin Williams has brushed aside any talk of this weekend’s opponents being a bogey team.

London 2 South-West leaders Totts travel to Effingham & Leatherhead, where they lost out last season.

But Williams has reminded his squad that was the club’s only defeat there in some while – and he does not expect another one tomorrow.

He said: “I have looked at results for the last five years and we have lost one, the last one. Our recent record may not be good but we are a different team and we are going up there not hoping to win but to get a win.”

Totts travel with a settled squad but new recruit from the Army, Stewart Davies, takes over the full-back position as regular Bart van Herwijnen is unavailable.

Williams added: “I may sound like a football manager but if we keep winning our games we do not have to look to see if other teams slip up. If we win with bonus points we win the league – it’s as simple as that.”

Second-placed Winchester have other ideas and plan to get their 2015 under way after having last weekend’s vital clash with London Cornish postponed. Winch face a tough home fixture against fourth-placed KCS Old Boys as they look to continue their chase for the leaders.

Dr Johny Morris is unavailable due to hospital commitments, but it is hoped Greg Sullivan will be fit to return from injury at fly half. Tom Forster continues at full-back, a position which he is gradually growing into.

The pack returns to full strength with hooker Chris Searle and loose head Rob Arthur both having used the extra week’s rest to recover from niggling injuries.

Head coach Andy Fields also hopes to give Pat Cheshire, who has been excellent for the twos this season, a chance to impress from the bench.
