Success for Hampshire in the RFU’s cup competitions comes down to the fortunes of a handful of clubs this weekend.

While most sides have an early break from league and cup action others are taking part in the Intermediate Cup and Senior and Junior Vase contests.

Tottonians and Portsmouth will be flying the flag in the Intermediate Cup, with Totts at home to Old Colfeians and Pompey travelling to Aylesford Bulls.

London club Old Colfeians head to Water Lane with just one league success to their name.

They have leaked 92 points while hosts Tottonians – in second spot in SW2 – have the best defence record in their league, having conceded just 11 points.

Assistant coach Adrian Spafford takes charge of tomorrow’s game but head coach Gavin Williams, has left him with a strong squad.

Williams said: “We have had a good start and we want to maintain that momentum in the cup.

“We are treating the competition and our opponents with the respect they deserve.

“We have selected a strong side with only two changes to the starting XV.”

Props Nick Wood and Nathan Burns swap places on the bench and promising Hampshire under-20 prop Tom Gregory is handed his first team debut.

Experienced fullback Scott Rogers returns and Ben Dolbear reverts to the replacement bench.

Another side hoping to take their league form into the cup is Eastleigh.

The Bishopstoke Road side took command of London SW3 last weekend with a decisive victory over New Milton and head for Bromley, who have a similar record in SE3, in the Senior Vase.

The Kent side sit in second spot with three wins from three and Eastleigh captain Paul Fudio admits he knows little else about them.

He said: “We take cup games seriously but the league is our priority.

“We are using this to bring in some new faces so if we have injuries later in the season we have people who can fill in.”

Two players who have represented the club in the colts and seconds, wing Matt Lovell and second row Richard Stroud, have been named as replacements.
