Wycombe want to rebound after 13-try drop

WYCOMBE RFC will look to get back to their flowing best tomorrow after scoring 13 tries fewer last week than they did the match before.

After trouncing Wootton Bassett 85-7 they were brought back down to earth with a soporific 3-3 draw at second-from-bottom Reading Abbey and captain Craig Murray admits he can’t remember playing in a game quite like it.

He said: “I don’t think I’ve ever been in a match that low-scoring.

“Maybe when I was younger but certainly not in my Wycombe days. If I have I can’t remember it.”

Wycombe blew into Reading with the force of six straight wins billowing their sails, but a few changes of personnel and a tinge of complacency stopped them dead in their tracks.

Murray said: “We made five changes, most of them were in the backs and that probably affected our attacking prowess, but we saw their position in the league and were a bit complacent.

“Fair play to Reading. They are fighting relegation and brought it to us, but we were flat and it was a big comedown from the high-scoring match of the previous week.”

Reading never threatened a try and Wycombe only sporadically during the 80 minutes, with Murray admitting most of the match was ‘dogged out in the middle of the pitch’.

The only good news for Wycombe was a defeat for Marlow, who began the day as their closest challengers for second place.

Swanage now hold that position after winning at Buckingham, but Wycombe still have a three-point cushion.

Murray said: “Second place is in our hands to put away now, but we’re not looking at it like we’ve got a bit of breathing space.

“We certainly need to raise our game again and the focus is just on winning and getting back to the way we played against Wootton Bassett.”

Wycombe host Buckingham tomorrow hoping to make up for a 15-7 defeat at their place.

Murray said: “We didn’t play well there, but they’re a good side so it will be a battle.”
