Chesham United’s inconsistent run of form continued last night when they were beaten 3-1 at home by Cambridge City, who recorded their first away league victory since December.

The defeat leaves the Generals 19th in the Southern League Premier Division table, nine points clear of the drop zone but with as many as five games in hand on the sides around them as a result of postponements and their cup exploits earlier in the season.

After Saturday’s match against Histon had been called off, Chesham would have been hoping to build on last week’s 4-1 victory at Wymouth.

But City looked lively from the outset and took the lead on the half hour when John Kaye saw his shot parried skyward by Shane Gore. The ball looked to be dropping in but was cleared off the line but Danny Kelly was in the right place to nod home.

Kelly doubled his tally in the 53rd minute after being put clean through by James Hall and the supplier turned scorer just after the hour when he nipped past three challenges to make it 3-0.

Dave Pearce did pull one back in the 70th minute but the home side were unable to make any other further inroads, with Cambridge going close to adding a fourth late on when they struck the post.

Chesham travel to Bideford on Saturday, while their game against Histon has been rearranged for Tuesday.

Chalfont St Peter did beat the weather at the weekend but they were unable to halt their disappointing run as they were defeated 2-1 by Fleet Town.

After Jack French had given Fleet a 15th-minute lead, Saints got back on terms midway through the second half when Michael Murray prodded home. But their hopes of at least a point were ended by Ben White’s late winner.

Saints sit sixth in Division One Central, two points outside the play-off zone, and two places and four points lower in the table are Beaconsfield SYCOB after they were held to a frustrating goalless draw at basement side North Greenford United on Tuesday.

SYCOB, who had seen Saturday’s trip to Petersfield Town postponed, are at home to Leighton Town this weekend, while Chalfont will aim to get back on track at Arlesey Town.

It is now one win in nine for Marlow in Division One Central & West after they crashed to a 5-0 home defeat against Didcot Town.

The hosts were up against it after seven minutes when Jack Self scored, but it took a number of good saves to keep his side in front at the interval.

George Reid doubled the lead shortly after the restart, but Marlow must have known it wasn’t their day midway through the half when Devontae Romeo smacked a penalty across the crossbar and then converted the rebound, only for the referee to disallow it for touching the ball twice.

Penalties provided more misery for Marlow as Mark Janes converted twice from 12 yards in the final 11 minutes and there was still time for Reid to net his second.

The defeat leaves Marlow 17th in the table ahead of Saturday’s trip to Yate Town.

Holmer Green’s Spartan South Midlands Premier Division trip to London Tigers was called off on Saturday, but Risborough Rangers are now unbeaten in 14 games in all competitions after beating Brimsdown 4-2 in Division One. Martin Griggs led the way with a hat-trick and Geri Nicosia also netted.

Amersham Town produced an encouraging performance on their travels but were beaten 3-2 at Pitstone & Ivinghoe in Division Two. Callum Neal and Kieran Knight scored for the visitors.
