A TOUCH of sporting class came to Wycombe this week as a top women’s team taught the boys a thing or two.

The England Women’s Touch Rugby squad kicked off its 2015 World Cup campaign at Bucks New University with a series of fitness testing sessions in the University’s Human Performance Laboratory.

With the help of Human Performance Lab Manager, Gary Peters, and his team of students, the players were put through their paces over two days.

And as well as lab tests, the side underwent fitness tests at High Wycombe RUFC and took on the uni’s first team in some competitive matches.

Samantha Phillips, Head Coach of England Senior Women's Touch Team, said: “The girls have a lot of hard training to do before they take on the other nations in the World Cup being held in New South Wales, Australia next April and May, and it was good to establish a marker of their current fitness levels and therefore what needs to be achieved over the next 200 days.

“A great time was had by all and hopefully there will be more touch rugby played up at the University and High Wycombe RFC as a result. A big thank you from England Senior Women's Touch Team to all involved.”

Touch rugby, is a form of the game in which players do not tackle in the traditional, physical way, but instead touch their opponents to successfully complete the tackle.

A formal, competitive variety, known as Touch, developed from rugby league and now exists as a sport in its own right.
