Whitchurch United 3 Cowes Sports 2.
Whitchurch faced a confident Cowes Sports but early pressure from the Jam Boys was rewarded by Mario Nurse’s well-struck goal.
United continued to dominate but after 20 minutes, an unintentional handball by Tom Hindmarsh just outside the box led to a free-kick which brought Cowes back into the game. A minute later Paul Coventry, playing up front, restored United’s lead and their continued pressure allowed Luke Walker to score with a well-judged lob 15 minutes after. Solid defending and good short passing meant United went into half-time well in control at 3-1. Sadly for the home team, the second half saw them tiring after their drawn match on Thursday night and Cowes playing with renewed vigour. After a period of sustained Cowes pressure, a goal in the 65th minute set the game up for a nail-biting finish. Although Cowes were dominant, some excellent saves by Hindmarsh, supported by a solid defence, kept United’s lead intact. United move up to tenth in the league with games in hand over most ahead of them.
