Arms stage a dramatic comeback to clinch victory

Finals Day once again proved another huge success as the Andover Pool League sponsored by Creative Webtech hosted six finals at the Queen Charlotte.

The only team match to be staged proved to be the most exciting with Clatford Arms Dealers narrowly beating the Battle Station 5-4 in the team B final.

At one stage though it seemed that the Station would run out 5-2 winners with Paul Jenes and his partner Madeleine Klippel set to win in what looked like a very advantageous position.

However, they lost, bringing the scores to 4-3 before Ben Battey cleared in the next to make it 4-4.

Sarah Chambers and Tim Battey doubled up to turn the match on its head and give Clatford a deserved victory.

Sarah was the real star of the frame potting a succession of balls. But in the end it was left to Tim to finish up and take the title.

It was quite a day for Carl Nicol and his partner Anthony Feeley. They had to play their semi-final at the Southampton Arms before heading up to the Charlotte to play in the final.

At one stage the pair were 3-0 down to Craig Rees and Graham Parker from the QCCs and it looked as though the rushing around had affected their concentration.

However, from nowhere they managed to draw level and set up a nail-biting finale at 3-3.

In the end though it was Craig and Graham who crept over the finish line.

The ladies final pitted mother and daughter together. Daughter Kara Rees Webbe, who had won the final of the winter league, was looking for a successive title.

Initially though Kara did not have things her own way. She cleared up to the black before the object ball and the white went into the same pocket Unfortunately this was the only crumb of comfort for Dawn who saw her daughter reel off the next four frames to claim another ladies single title.

Experience took centre stage in the Captains final. Sean Norris from Central FD showed Carl Shipsey (captain of Division 5 team Railway Tavern) the difference between the Premiership and the lower divisions in winning 4-1.

Carl looks like he would not be out of place at a much higher level.

Craig and Karen Kennedy won the mixed doubles in a close fought match against Sean and Kayleigh (Southampton Arms) 3-1.

John Francis and John Herredge met in the men’s singles. Herredge won the first frame in next to no time before Francis pegged him back to 2 frames all.

Francis then showed why he is a Hampshire Pool player taking the next two frames to lead the match 4-2 with some excellent potting and positional play.

Although Herredge clawed a frame back, an error in the eighth frame let Francis in to win his first Andover Pool singles title.
