The last couple of weeks have been busy for Andover Bowls Club.
Recently the A side played the B in the Whitchurch Wednesday League. A previous encounter saw the A side win 4-1, but in recent weeks their form has dropped significantly. The closest triples match saw B team’s Irene Hunt, Ken Eaton and Mike Ford defeat Bill Rawlinson, Linnie Catchpole and Bob Wood 18-14. B team’s Cynthia Hamilton, Roy Turner and Richard Hunt had a 22-14 victory over Jim Catchpole, Tom Hazard and Peter Merritt.
This match had a big turning point at the mid point nine end mark, where Hunt’s triple picked up a six count to make the score 10-12 and from that point they surged ahead and never looked back. Finally Jackie and Robin Kingston teamed up with skip Ray Westbrook for a convincing 27-10 win over Marie Baird, John Allenby and Dennis Fowler. This result pushed the B team into fourth place and the A team into fifth.
In the Salisbury Triples League Jim Horne’s team recently overcame a Salisbury team, which nearly always are crowned league runners up, with Alderbury the winners. The Andover side produced a superb 12-2 win, their tenth in 11 matches, which puts them right in contention for runners up and possibly even the title.
The club recently played its new one day drawn pairs. Some excellent bowls were played with all winning at least one game. The final saw Jackie Kingston and Mike Ford have a fairly comfortable win over Irene Hunt and Robin Kingston, with one half of the Kingston household going away happy.
On Sunday Andover played a friendly against St Mary Bourne, an ideal opportunity to play new bowlers in match conditions. The format was triples on the excellent surface prepared by Richard Hunt and his team. Both teams played well but Andover ran out winners overall by six shots.
