The competitions in the Turners Butchers sponsored Andover Pool Winter League are nearing completion.
There will be many old names vying for the top honours but also some new names looking to become champions for the first time. In the mixed doubles it was business as usual for Chris Newman and Carly from the QCCs who completed a hat-trick of consecutive wins, at the expense of Andy and Angelina Bannan. Ultimately it was Chris’s finishing skills coupled with Carly’s tremendous improvement which led to the championship. Carl Nicol and Kirsty Brown deserve a lot of credit for reaching the semi-finals.
The men’s singles lineup has a strangely unfamiliar feel and a new champion will be crowned. Sean Curtis and John Gray from the Southampton Arms A and Sean Norris and Carl Nicol will battle it out. John Gray’s 3-1 win over Open champion Colin Harris was the pick of the results. Queen Charlotte will be up against the Southampton Arms A in the final of the A Cup after a comprehensive 5-0 win over Magic Roundabout while the Arms had a similar result. This final will now be played in early April.
The final of the Team B competition will be between Bell Inn Bees and Abbots Ann Eagles. Bell Inn had a deserved 5-1 over the Merlin while Abbots Ann Eagles overcame a spirited Southampton Arms D 5-3.
In the leagues, Queen Charlotte retain top spot in the Premiership despite having lost again to the Royal Oak Charlton. They are now only three points ahead of Southampton Arms B who have strengthened their team by signing Andy Wesley.
Abbots Ann Eagles and Castle Jousters are the only teams with 100 per cent records.
