ANDOVER New Street picked up their third win of the season after an impressive 2-0 victory against Verwood Town at Foxcotte Park to move up to third in the Wessex League Division One table.

Goals from Wade Crisp and Nic Turpin separated the sides in this contest and tonight travel to Hamble Club in the Hampshire Senior Cup.

Kicking up the slope was not the only initial struggle New Street faced as 10 players were absent for various reasons for the visit of Verwood.

Michael Horne, Aaron Jefferies, Allan Ralph, Michael Richmond, and Charlie Rogers all played their first games of the season.

Richmond’s last game for Street could well have been that long ago that he played alongside Rogers’ father Shaun around 10 years ago.

Verwood Town were straight out of the blocks from the start and put early pressure on debutant Horne’s goal. The first real chance fell to their captain Russel Dyer who blazed over from just inside the box.

A flurry of corners from the away resulted in a goal line clearance from Aaron Jefferies and a fine save from Horne.

With Verwood not taking their opportunity to take the lead it was Street who would capitalise.

An initial shot from captain, Casson Spencer, saw Will Dennis make a good save but give the home side a corner.

A tremendous cross from Zac Hine and great work from Turpin, creating space for team mates, meant that Crisp met the ball with a towering header which flew into the net with just 11 minutes on the clock.

It was Verwood however who continued to dominate in the first half, seeming to not let the goal clip their feathers.

The cross bar and a great last ditch tackle from Ralph were enough to keep Street in front.

A few mistimed tackles crept into the game as Jamie Pollard and Richmond got themselves into the referees' book.

The best chance in the later stages of the first half fell to Spencer.

With just Dennis to beat, the New Street forward seemed to get the ball stuck in his feet and the final strike did not possess enough power to trouble Verwood’s keeper.

Horne was still busy for Street and kept Joe Meyer at bay with a good save at his feet.

As the half neared its end, Verwood unfortunately had to make an early substitution as Martin Smith was carried off with what appears an Achilles heel injury.

The second half could not have started any better for New Street.

With just a minute showing from the restart, Turpin made a great run and was found by a long ball from Pollard. From 20 yards Turpin struck the ball wonderfully and the ball powered its was past Dennis and into the bottom corner for the prolific Journeyman’s first goal of the season.

Street were much more dominant in the second half and should have added to their 2 goal lead. Spencer was put through on goal for the second time of the game but a last ditch tackle meant the scores the same.

Hine was next to go close as he cut in for the right hand side but his finish didn’t match his trickery.

The game quietened down and some great football was played by both sides at times.

Verwood’s best chance of the second, similar to the first, fell again to Dyer as he hit the best with just an empty net to hit. It appeared today was not the away teams day.

There was one last strike in the match though as Spencer, again in the thick of it, picked up a nice pass from New Street man of the match Josh Wilson.

Spencer cut in from the left flank and let fly from 30 yards. The ball zoomed past the far post and kept the score 2-0.

The final whistle blew and the win meant Street had nine points after two weeks of the season starting. It took the Andover side four months last season to collate as many points.
