ANDOVER Town celebrated the conclusion of their successful league campaign with their end of season awards.

The team, who finished fourth in the Wessex Premier League this season, gathered at the Portway Stadium earlier this month for the ceremony, to mark the individual achievements of players throughout the year.

Charlie Gunson was arguably the biggest winner on the night, scooping the Supporter’s Player of the Year award and the team’s top scorer prize following a remarkable breakthrough season for the youngster, who netted 19 times in all competitions.

The forward also picked up the club’s Goal of the Season prize, presented by Graham Cousins and Alan Mussell, for his solo effort against Fawley in April.

Meanwhile the Player’s Player of the Year was split between captain Lewis Benson and defender Connor Cocklin, who was also named the club’s Young Player of the Year.

Benson also picked up Most Outstanding Performance of the Season, for his remarkable four-goal haul during Town’s 6-1 home win over Alresford.

Manager Neil Benson selected defensive midfielder Chris Onoufriou as his player of the year.

Onoufriou put in a string of consistent performances throughout the season despite often having to play in various positions including a prolonged spell at right-back.

Winger Sammy Pekun scooped the Away Supporter’s Player of the Year award while there was also a special mention for goalkeeper Jamie Bray who was voted Youth Section Player of the Year.

Bray has been heavily involved with the youth team throughout the season, often joining in with training sessions and giving tips and advice to the club’s youngsters.

During the proceedings chairman Stuart Barlow talked to the assembled guests about his reflections both on this season and on the past three years.

Mr Barlow identified the growing presence of the youth section and made a special mention of Sparsholt Saints Academy players, such as Connor Cocklin, Ibrahim Olutade, Kris Oti and Adam Grange, as key to the club’s continued development.

He thanked the support from the local community which ensured that average attendances rose this year.

Manager Benson and assistant, John Robson, paid tribute to the support that the club receives from Sparsholt and Andover College while also thanking John Ward, of Premier Coatings, who he described as a ‘key element’ in guiding the club to its current position.

The team will now break until July when they return for pre-season.

Club officials have already highlighted their desire to mount a promotion charge next season to meet their ambitions of bringing Southern League football to the town.
