WHITCHURCH United were knocked out of the FA Vase on Tuesday night following a 4-0 away defeat at Western Football League side Welton Rovers.

The Jam Boys were forced into playing the mid-week fixture after drawing 2-2 in the original tie at home on Saturday.

In-form striker Danny Phillips scored a brace to secure a replay for Whitchurch but it was a different story on Tuesday night as they were heavily beaten by Welton.

Travelling with just 11 players, one of whom was an under 18 making his debut appearance, the Jam Boys were down 2-0 at half time.

Whitchurch had chances to get themselves back into the tie but were wasteful up front.

Welton took full advantage, adding a further two goals in the second half to bring the Jam Boys’ Vase run to an abrupt halt.

After the match a disappointed Carl Bennet told the Andover Advertiser: “We have no one to blame but ourselves for not taking our opportunities and getting the result when we were at home.

“We had injuries and illnesses on Tuesday night and it killed us but they weren’t four goals better than us.

“We were 2-0 down at half time and with our heads down in the second half they scored two more but we had opportunities ourselves.”

Whitchurch, in 20th place, face a crucial game with 17th-placed Fawley this Saturday, a match which Bennet describes as ‘a must win’.

He said: “It’s a massive game for us – We have to get a result on Saturday.

“We are brining in a few players to freshen up the squad and hopefully that helps. Luke Nellor is coming in from Basingstoke Town to get some game time at this level – that is great for us.”
