FOUR goals from birthday boy Danny Phillips helped Whitchurch United to a revenge victory over Bournemouth on Saturday, as they romped to a 6-0 home win in the FA Vase.

The striker bagged a first-half hattrick to help the Jamboys get their revenge on the Poppies, who hit five past them in a league fixture a week earlier.

And it took Phillips, who was celebrating his 26th birthday, just 16 seconds to score his first after receiving a gift of a pass from Reece Rusher.

Rusher was involved again two minutes later when his cross was met by the head of Jack McCarthy who headed home to give his side a 2-0 lead inside five minutes.

Rusher was rewarded for his unselfish play on ten minutes when his lobbed effort beat the on rushing Poppies goalkeeper to put Whitchurch 3-0 up.

It was déjà vu just five minutes later when Phillips grabbed his second of the match in almost identical style, lobbing the goalkeeper who had rushed from his line once again.

Phillips completed his hat-trick in sublime style after 25 minutes, beating four defenders with a mazy run and stabbing home.

Whitchurch manager Carl Bennet brought on Dave Parry in place of McCarthy as the Jamboys continued to attack Bournemouth.

The home side squandered several chances before Bennett mad his final two changes, bringing Ewan Mathias on for Lewis Alderman and Tre Manders on for Dec McCarthy.

The ever-dangerous Phillips continued to cause trouble for the Poppies and could have had his fourth with an audacious lob but his effort bounced off the crossbar and out to safety.

However the striker was not to be denied moments later as he fired home his fourth of the game with a placed shot into the bottom corner.

Speaking after the game, a delighted Bennett said: “We really needed that result after the week before when they beat us 5-0.

“We were no were near our best that day and I told the boys that they owed it to themselves to get a result.

“We were just a completely different side with a completely different attitude – I couldn’t fault them at all.”

The result means Whitchurch move into the First Round Proper of the FA Vase where they will face Western Football League side Welton Rovers.

However Bennett is now focusing on the Jamboys league form, with the team currently lingering in 20th with just two wins from their opening nine games.

He said: “We have told the boys already, no more excuses, it has to change.

“We have to start getting results and get ourselves back up the table where we belong.

“We’ve made a statement by beating a team in our league 6-0 and now we have to carry that good work on.”
