Welcome Stranger v. Anton Arms

WELCOME Stranger progressed to the next round of the Sunday League Junior Cup with a 4-1 away win over Anton Arms.

Anton started brightly and should have taken the lead but for some terrific saves from Stranger’s goalkeeper Mike Horne.

However it was the away side who broke the deadlock after 20 minutes through Marc Dennis.

Stranger then doubled their lead shortly before the break through James Rogers.

Youngster Callum Lee was brought on at half-time for Stranger and made an instant impact, setting up Luke Soulby, who put the away side 3-0 up.

Ben Andrews added Stranger’s fourth before Anton pulled one back despite the best efforts of Horne, who was unfortunate to see his point blank save deflect into the path of an attacker.

Twinings v. Broughton Reserves

Broughton Reserves came agonisingly close to causing a Junior Cup upset, losing 5-3 in extra time to Twinings.

Broughton took the lead when James Dickie's corner found it's way into the net off Jake Hutchence Shin in a goalmouth scramble.

However their lead was short lived as Twinings equalised 10 minutes later.

The village side quickly responded when man-of-the-match Craig Bates beautiful piece of control and flick on from a high clearance was met by Brandon Smith who lobbed the ball over the Twinings keeper, giving Broughton a 2-1 half time lead.

Broughton started the second half strongly and doubled their lead when Smith scored his sixth of the season with a sublime volley to put the visitors 3-1 up.

However, with just eight minutes remaining, Twinings cut Broughton's advantage and four minutes later were gifted an equaliser after the Broughton defence failed to clear to take the tie into extra time.

With momentum behind them, the home side found another goal in either side of extra time to book their place in the next round of the competition.

George SMB v. Cabin 35

George SMB secured their first three points of the season as they ran out 6-3 winners against Cabin 35.

George SMB dominated for much of the game and Jon-Marc Spatcher marked his debut with an early goal.

However a defensive error allowed Cabin 35 to equalise.

Parity was short lived with Craig Newell coolly slotting home, restoring the visitors advantage going into half time.

Early in the second half Sean Anderson volleyed home to give the George a two goal cushion before he adding another shortly after.

It looked like the game was over however the Cabin scored two goals to leave the score at 4-3 with 10 minutes left.

Allan Ralph made it 5-3 before Anderson completed the scoring late on.
