OVERTON United progressed to the semi-final of the Basingstoke Senior Cup at the expense of Aldermaston thanks to second-half goals from Ollie Bode and Danny Houseman.

Joint boss Jamie Fewtrell commented: “In the first half the game was fairly even but frustration was increasing as Aldermaston were vulnerable in defence, but I must say Overton were lacking a bit of quality in last third and the killer instinct in front of goal was not there in the first half. Overton should have been two goals up by halftime.”

After the break Overton upped the tempo and kept Aldermaston pinned back in their own half and more chances came their way as Houseman, Dave Parry and Luke Neller all went close but on the hour Bode gave United the lead.

Houseman had a one-on-one with the keeper, but his shot went just past the far post and Nick Jupp and Bode again went close until Overton's hard work paid off when Neller put a pinpoint cross into the six-yard box for Houseman to head home with 15 minutes left.

Aldermaston went straight back, and some last-ditch tackles had to be made to keep them at bay, but on the 80th minute they got a goal back through a defensive mistake.

Overton kept their composure to ensure their place in the last four.

Man of the match was Kirk Smith.

On Saturday Overton’s match at QK Southampton fell foul of the weather and was postponed.
