Grand Finals Championship dace Day at Wiltshire's Castle Combe did not start well for local drivers Simon Tilling and Richard Atkinson-Wiles.

The morning qualifying sessions were wet at the fast 1.85 mile circuit which had Tilling fighting with a powerful car on a slippery track, writes Tim Crisp.

Atkinson-Wiles was in his Reynard SF79 in the HSCC Formula Ford 2000 Championship and finished both races in eight place, his fastest lap on the dry track for the second race16 seconds faster than in qualifying.

The mighty Ligier JS49T of Tilling with a top end speed of 175 mph is a handful in the dry let alone in the wet qualifying which saw the Honda powered car fourth on the grid for the 20 minutes Sports Racing Car Series event.

As the race set off on a rolling start Tilling shot from fourth to first before the first bend at Folly and then he started to build what looked like to be an uncatchable lead.

At one point he was more than 22 seconds in front, however as the clock ticked, so did his lap times and with two laps to go a trail of smoke could be seen at some of the corners, but because of the lead Simon had enough to hold on for the win, by 3.5 seconds.

When asked what had happened the reply was "something broke" followed by "the lesson from today is never ease up when you are in front.”
