The Hampshire Golf Club held its Open Championship and High Handicapper Competition last weekend.

The Open is, as its name suggests, open to all members as a medal competition, while the High Handicapper is open to any member playing off 18 or above.

Both were played under sunny skies but a strong wind made low scoring difficult.

Colin Harris took the honours in the High Handicap, with Julie Dixon in second.

Harris also won the Open, with a score of net 70.

Dixon once again made the placings, finishing in third with a net 72, just one shot behind Steven White in second with net 71.

In an otherwise undistinguished round, club captain Barry Thorne made up for a below average round with a first ever hole in one on the 14th and will receive a limited edition Boss watch via the Howdidido web-site.

HAMPSHIRE GC hosted Leckford GC in their penultimate home friendly.

In match one captain Ray Neath was partnered by Chris Ardy and after nine holes the Leckford pair was one up.

But Ardy won the 13th to make the match all square and then Neath won the 15th with nett four and the last three holes were halved, which resulted in a home win by one up.

In match two there was some good golf with Vince Klass and Phil Jones winning 4 and 3, while in match three 13 holes were halved but unfortunately Alan Dixon and Bob Houghton lost the 17th and were unable to win the last, despite both getting pars.

This is the eighth time Dixon has lost one down this season. Guy Davis and Mick Mumford were paired for the third time and won an enjoyable match played against very good company by 5 and 3.

Dean Cresswell and Bernard Hancke played another close game with the home pairing two down after 15 before winning the 16th and 17th to go all square, but sadly they could not sustain the momentum and lost the 18th to lose one down.

In the final match Paul Ridge, who was making his senior debut, was paired with Richard Hale and again it was a very close match that the home pairing won 2 and 1.

The overall result was a 4-2 win for the Hampshire, who remain unbeaten all season in home friendlies.

In the September Medal Sunday competition Derek Woodman (8) improved on his Saturday score and his excellent net 68 saw him win the division and receive a handicap cut to seven.

Nigel Gough (9) was second with a net 74. In Division 2 Dave Preston (19) took the honours with a net 72 from Matthew Woodman (17) with a net 73.

Vince Delderfield (18) played a superb round to win the September Division 2 Stableford with 42 points and his handicap is now 16.

He finished four points clear of Mark Baulf (17) who returned 38 with Matthew Woodman (17) continuing to play consistently well as he finished third with 37.

In Division 1 Steve Pyle (5) completed another excellent round to finish with 39 points.

Guy Davis (8) was second after scoring a total of 37.
