The juniors at Andover Tennis Club put on a great display of high quality tennis last weekend at the culmination of the summer long competition in the various age groups.

The U18 Boys final saw Alex Lee playing Jacob Webb in a hard hitting, pulsating match, which underlined why both have been representing the club in the Men’s first teams this season.

Webb defended well but Lee had the edge and emerged the champion 6-2, 6-0. In the Boys’ U16 final, Gregor Corcoran beat Thomas Lee 6-2, 6-1 with both reaching an excellent standard of baseline drives and good approach shots.

In the Girls’ U16 final Georgia Moon beat Amy McDonald 6-4, 6-4 and again both have represented the club in the adult first teams this summer and the match ebbed and flowed, with some penetrating drives from both wings.

In the Boys’ U14 final Will Moon beat Thomas Lee 6-2, 6-1. Both have had excellent summers representing the club, and the final was of a high standard.

Moon is tenacious and countered Lee’s powerful drives with attacking shots of his own and emerged as the winner.

In the Girls’ U14 final Amy McDonald beat Alicia Cole 6-1, 6-0 who has made great strides this summer, but McDonald’s weight of shot proved superior.

Young Moon was again on court, this time beating Thomas Grossi in the U12 final 6-0, 6-1, which was of a high standard for such young players and both were a credit to their coaches.

In the Girls’ U12 match Alicia Cole played Sedona Jamieson with both working the corners of the court well with their drives. Cole won 4-2, 4-1.

Mini tennis is played with low compression balls to suit the size and the height of the players and the Boy’s U10s had semi-finals and a final played between four excellent young players, Mark Mackie, Oliver Hall, Myles Cole and Jacob Simmonds who will form the teams of the future at the club.

The eventual winner was Mackie, whose consistency of shot was the telling factor.

In the Girls’ U10s, Olivia Besant’s greater tournament experience and weight of shot saw her emerge the winner over Eleanor Burrows 4-0. The U9 event saw a very close encounter between Ewan Small and Humphrey Hughes. Both have great potential and the match went to a deciding tie-break with Small winning 1-4, 4-0, 10-4. In the event for the youngest competitors (U8s) Matthew Cooke won a tight tie-breaker against Matthew Gates 10-8.

The U18 Boys’ Doubles was of exceptional quality with some rat-a-tat rallies at net and plenty of power play.

The older pairing of Alex Lee and Jacob Webb beat Gregor Corcoran and Thomas Lee 6-3, 6-2 while in the U14 Girls’ Doubles, Amy McDonald and Niamh Mathias beat Alicia Cole and Venetia Smith 6-2, 6-2.

The Boys’ U14 Doubles went to Thomas Lee and Will Moon who beat Michael Cooke and Tommy Mackie 6-1; 6-1 and Edward Hall and William Moon beat Thomas Grossi and Sam Truscott 6-0; 6-3 in the U12s.

One of the best matches of the day was the U18 Mixed Doubles with the highest quality of play from all four players, Alex Lee and Georgia Moon beating Jacob Webb and Amy McDonald 6-4; 6-2.

Trophies were presented by guest of honour, Sandra Holmes, from the Hampshire Lawn Tennis Association. Special awards were given to Mark Mackie and Matthew Gates for the most improved mini tennis players; to Alicia Cole, Michael Cartridge and Jacob Webb for the most improved junior club players; and to Georgia Moon, Alex Lee and Dan Arnold for outstanding contributions to Andover Tennis Club.
