Amport II v Penton.

The eagerly awaited top of the table clash between Penton and Amport II took place at the Peacocks.

Darren Goacher was pleasently surprised to be asked to field first after losing the toss.

Ben Parkyn produced an unplayable delivery to see the back of the dangerous John Hunter in only the second over and with Pete Van Der Westhuizen tying Wayne Green in knots, runs only came from the bat of Richard Jenson.

Making the most of being dropped Jensen was scoring only in boundaries and it took a stunning catch by Sam Birks at point off Parkyn to end his stay with score on 39 in the eighth over.

Bevon Joseph was striking the ball cleanly and Penton were 91-2 at drinks.

Birks removed the limpet like Green via a catch by Van der Westhuizen and in the same over Joseph's luck ran out as he was run out by smart work by Goacher at long leg for 37. Penton were then 98-4.

Goacher’s fine ten over spell yielded six maidens at a cost of only 18 runs, while adding another wicket to his season's haul courtesy of a well judged catch by Nick Bone at long on.

Tom Startup was equally as impressive with a wicket in his first over to finish with 1-22.

Rouse kept the innings together and despite a well deserved wicket for Van Der Westhuizen, Penton rallied to post 194-9 off their 42 overs.

Parkyn announced his intentions by unfurling a sumptious straight drive from the first ball and with Martin Randall 29 were on the board inside six overs.

Randall then departed and Bone and Parkyn showed their undoubted class forcing Penton on the defensive.

With the total on 96 Bone was run out for 35 but Martyn Startup started nervously but was soon looking solid, while at the other end Parkyn was going from strength to strength.

Shortly after reaching his fifty he was dropped and made the most of his let off and started to score almost at will. Startup edged to Huw Rouse off Kerry Charles for 25 on 176 before a controlled glide to the third man boundary saw him reach the black cap earning century.

Van Der Westhuisen then launched a massive blow into the cornfield to secure a seven wicket win, and overturn the points differential to put Amport II top of the league.

A superb team effort means promotion is secured and the destination of the title is now in their hands.
