The Hampshire Golf Club annual Stableford championships took place last weekend with 18 holes played on each day and all qualifying members able to take part. Round one was played in overcast conditions with some wind and when all had completed their rounds, Nigel Gough was seventh out of the 40 contestants with 35 points. Charlie Hughes was sixth with 36, Glennis Robson fifth with 36, Paul Ridge fourth with 37, Julie Dixon third with 37 and Derek Woodman second with 37.

The clear leader was Tracy Price with a superb 41 point score.

The forecast for Sunday was not too promising but in the end the conditions proved to be quite good, although there was a strong wind which made conditions difficult. However the scoring was very good and David Miller returned 36 points to finish fifth with a total of 70. Sean Norris scored 39 to finish fourth, Colin Harris went one better with an excellent 40 to finish third with 73 and Hughes returned the best score of the weekend with a magnificent 42 points to end up in second place with a total of 77. However, some exceptional play from Price saw her returning another good score of 39 to finish Stableford champion with the grand total of 80 and a three point victory which was thoroughly deserved. The Seniors entertained Botley Park on what may be the last fixture between as the course looks likely to close later this year. Some old and new faces did battle on what was a pleasant day but there was always the threat of rain, thunder and lightning. Alan Dixon stood in for Seniors’ captain Ray Neath and again partnered Bob Houghton and yet again this pairing was up against it with the opposition shooting a low better-ball score and winning 4 and 3. Mick Mumford and Phil Jones also lost 4 and 3 but John Dawson and Rob Perkins stopped the rot as they won The Hampshire's first point with a well fought 2 and 1 victory. Things did not look too good after Ted Richards and Roger Lazarreti lost 3 and 2. Rob Collicott and Ron Wake gained a valuable 2 and 1 win meaning it was all on the final pair. Alan need not have worried as the dependable John Rogers and unbeaten Barry Thompson had a resounding 4 and 3 victory, resulting in a drawn match and that meant the Hampshire continue with their excellent form by not yet losing a match at home.
