Sophie flies the Falcons' flag

Basingstoke Gazette: Sophie flies the Falcons' flag Sophie flies the Falcons' flag

Its been busy few months for the Fighting Falcons who have been active on the UK’s largest fight circuits.

On the CIMAC Super League the leading light has been Brandon Prince who recently came home with a double gold leaving him ranked number one in the league in both the -65kg and +65kg advanced cadet divisions. There is still a long way to go to the final event in November but Brandon is consistently performing well and is likely to continue in the same vein over the next four events.
The last KWON Grand Slam event of the year was held in Birmingham on June 8 and with most of the senior team at WAKO GB Squad training, Sophie Robinson flew the flag for the Falcons winning yet another gold in the Ladies’ Novice Division. Sophie has been outstanding this year, travelling far and wide to gain as much mat time and experience as she can. Her dedication has paid off and this latest win secures her place as the 2014 KWON Grand Slam Champion.

This week saw the Falcons launch a new satellite club at the Tidworth Community Centre under club instructor Jon Van Den Heuvel. Jon has recently finished full time education and has now entered into an apprenticeship with the Falcons as a club instructor. He has come up through the Falcons’ training programme and as a cadet he won four world titles with the WKA and ISKA England teams as well as winning the 2013 Hampshire and IOW Junior Sports Person of the Year.

Now training with the WAKO GB national team, Jon has set himself the target of winning domestic and international honors as a senior in both light contact and full contact kickboxing.

Recently Jon has been building his experience in the adult full contact world winning bouts against local fighters at both Andover and Basingstoke fight nights. In three weeks he will be on the undercard at a world title event in Yeovil and anyone seeking tickets can obtain them from the Falcons club in either Andover or Tidworth.

June has also seen the start of the Falconettes programme. This is a ladies only kickboxing and fitness programme that runs in the Andover club on a Saturday morning after the clubs’ junior team fight class, Combat Kids.
Combat Kids itself is also starting to pay dividends with many of the junior fighters starting to show real improvement. Callum Hollinshead has been selected to represent Great Britain at the WAKO Junior World Championships in September this year. The WAKO GB squad is the pinnacle of the sport and Callum will be only the fourth fighter from the Falcons to have represented at this level. A fantastic achievement in its own right The club has also launched a new page on Facebook for Falcons NERF Wars. Extremely popular with its members, the club is looking to serve the wider community by opening its NERF events to the local community. Styled after the Call of Duty game, this gives youngsters a chance to learn to work together as Teams in a variety of tactical situations. It's also great fun. Anyone interested in finding out when these events run can do so through www.facebook.com/FalconNERFWars
