The Hampshire GC Seniors hosted Ogbourne Downs for a friendly and gained a 3.5-2.5 victory.

The weather conditions were excellent and in match one captain Ray Neath partnered Norman Thrower who were two up after three holes with two birdies from the captain before Norman took over and with some excellent golf the home side eventually ran out winners by 4 and 2.

In match two, John Dawson was paired with Alan Jones, and this was Alan's first game representing the Seniors.

The game was nip and tuck throughout with good match play from all and Dawson and Jones found themselves one down going down the 18th however Dawson played the hole magnificently to win with a birdie too halve the match.

In match three, Barrie Thompson and Peter Rushworth gave another magnificent match play performance, the highlight an eagle three at the par five 13th by Rushworth and consistent play earned them a 3 and 2 victory.

In match four, John Rogers partnered new senior member John Dicks for his first match and they had a great start with par, birdie and par but found themselves only one up and things then went a little downhill from there and they lost 5 and 4.

In match five, Alan Dixon partnered Rob Perkins and in another good match play contest lost 2 and 1.

In the final match, Richard Hale and Bob Houghton complemented each other around the course and with such good play came out winners 4 and 3.

l On an overcast day always promising rain, senior vice captain Alan Dixon led the seniors for the first time in a friendly at Wellow.

Perhaps the extra responsibility weighed heavy on his shoulders as he and partner Bob Houghton did not get off to a good start going two down on the first two holes.

Despite playing well they were unable to claw back against outstanding play and lost 3 and 2.

John Rogers and Norman Thrower fared similarly in losing 3 and 2 but they were nip and tuck until the last few holes.

The third pairing of Rob Perkins and Ron Wake finally lost a close contest 2 and 1 and at that point things did not look good for the Hampshire side.

The fourth pair out was Ted Richards and Nigel Page and they were strong contenders to get the Hampshire’s first point as Wellow could not field a full team and these two were playing a single opponent.

They probably would have gone straight home if they lost but they overcame the good play by their opposition, winning 4 and 3.

The fifth pair of Richard Hale and Barrie Thompson also won 4 and 3 leaving the match result in the hands of the final pair and Dean Cresswell and Vince Klass did not disappoint as they too won 4 and 3 giving the Hampshire a well deserved draw away from home.
