Midweek Floodlit Cup Final next tonight for Andover Town's Sparsholt youngsters

Andover Town boss Neil Benson continues to juggle his various squads as he takes his Southampton Sparsholt side to Havant and Waterlooville tonight for the Hampshire Midweek Floodlit Cup Final.

With his College side already having won the National Trophy and County U18 Cup the Elite boys are looking for the treble as well as having more than an eye on the SW Counties League’s remaining fixtures where three wins from the final three games will bring the title in their first season.

It is expected that a couple of the youngsters may well be involved in next Wednesday’s Salisbury Hospital Cup Final against Bemerton Heath Harlequins at Salisbury City FC, a day which will be no less busy for Benson as at noon the Elite squad play their Bath counterparts at Sparsholt.

Last Wednesday’s remarkable Andover Open Cup Final defeat on penalties to Otterbourne brought praise from Benson who told the Advertiser: “The match had everything the public could want with some heartstopping moments and congratulations to Otterbourne after what was a hard fought game.”

“The standard of the pitch sadly made our usual passing game out of the question but we tried to make it a spectacle but it was difficult on that chosen venue.”

Town’s squad was decimated by injuries and niggles and the rules of the competition, which state that only players who have made five appearances or more for the club in the season can play in the final and semi-finals made things awkward. “The rules brought difficulties as a number of the youngsters who played in the earlier rounds were excluded.”

Foot had already played a friendly for AFC Wimbledon in the afternoon and with Cole HInchcliffe injured, Jordon O’Donnell unavailable and Dixon, Aromona, Alderman, Riddell, Robertson, Yates and Lewis Benson all struggling Town must be delighted there is just one more senior competitive game left in what has been a long but ultimately fruitful first campaign.

The Supporter’s Player of the Season Award will be presented on the pitch before the game at Salisbury and supporters travelling to the match are urged to be in the ground 15 minutes before the kick-off to help congratulate the winner who will be chosen from the votes e-mailed to the Advertiser sportsdesk and handed in to Lawrence Blair.

Votes can be sent up to close of play on Tuesday to Kerry at sportsdesk@andoveradvertiser.co.uk
