Andover Golfing Society's new season tee'd off recently with a visit to Marlborough GC, spearheaded by new society captain, Sean Canham.

At stake was the Alan Potter Memorial Trophy and the course was in excellent condition considering the recent ravages of weather, and the players were initially able to bask in an early spell of spring sunshine.

However, the fog descended in the latter part of the afternoon and despite visibility dropping alarmingly and some players finishing early, others seemed to do better when they couldn't see where they were going.

The fog meant that the competition secretary was forced to employ the notorious Wiley-Coupland score adjustment system. This resulted in Ken Sangster playing the support role, David Benwell creeping into third place on a count-back with 31 points, Cliff Tucker taking the runner-up slot with 33 and also a prize for nearest the pin on the second hole, and the cup going to Nick Hopson-Hill on 35.

The next meeting is at Rushmore GC next Thursday for the David Randall Spring Trophy. New members are always welcome - contact secretary Tony Ford on Andover 360886 or visit www.andovergolfingsociety.co.uk Pictured are David Benwell, Ken Sangster, Sean Canham, Nick Hopson-Hill and Cliff Tucker
