Baffins too strong for Overton in League Cup semi-final

Hants League Cup semi-final.

Overton United’s dream of a Hampshire Premier League and Cup double disappeared on Tuesday night when they were outgunned by title rivals Baffins Milton Rovers in the League Cup semi-final, held at Liss Athletic’s Newman Collard Playing Fields.

It was a sad end to the cup run but inevitable within 25 minutes as Ollie Watts gave his side a 2-0 lead and they were never seriously threatened after that.

Having suffered an awkward rush hour journey to the game, Overton struggled to settle and within four minutes were a goal down as keeper Sean O’Brien parried a dipping shot and Wells reacted first to net from five yards. Myles Englefield’s shot was saved at the other end following a neat move involving Danny Houseman and Chris Lavisher but on 25 minutes Watts shot from distance at the ball squirmed under O’Brien and rolled into the net.

James McCallion denied George Pharoah with a superb last gasp tackle but seconds after the break the tie was effectively all over as from a long throw Jason Parrish made it 3-0.

Nathan Rae brought a fine save out of Tony Male as Overton enjoyed a brief spell of dominance but just past the hour Blu Boam’s pace and strength provided Parrish with his second and Baffins’ fourth.

Lavisher went close as Overton looked for some crumbs of comfort but they were denied them and with ten minutes left substitute Danny Rimmer waltzed through and sold an outrageous dummy before netting the fifth.

Joint boss Jamie Fewtrell said after: “Baffins matched us and seemed to have the upper hand every time Overton lost possession.

‘We worked hard but made too many mistakes in the wrong areas of the pitch which gave Baffins two more goals and there was no way back.

‘Overton were not at their best tonight and Baffins thoroughly deserved to win the game.”
