Just champion Holly Mills!
11:02pm Monday 10th March 2014 in Sport
Holly Mills has become the first ever Andover AC athlete to win a gold medal at the England Athletics National Indoor Championships held at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.
On day one Holly was in action in the U15 long jump ranked fourth in the UK and knowing she would likely require a personal best to be among the medals.
She opened with a solid 5.08m for second place and followed with another 5.08m in round two but had slipped to sixth at the end of the round.
With a no jump in round three Holly remained sixth but another solid jump of 5.01m in round four meant no change in the leader board and she knew that a new indoor PB was needed to get among the medals.
In round five leader Josie Oliarnyk extended her lead with 5.38m and this seemed to inspire Holly as she pulled out a great jump of 5.35m to go second with one round remaining.
In the final round Oliarnyk did a no jump before a brilliant leap of 5.47m eventually saw her crowned national champion with a new club record and she now ranks first in the UK in the U15 age group.
Holly was in action again on day two targeting a place in the final of the 60m hurdles and hoping to improve her PB of 9.30secs.
In the heats Holly finished second to progress to the semi-finals finishing third in 9.32 - good enough as a fastest loser.
The final was very close blanket finish with the first four separated by 0.04secs. Holly ran another solid race to finish sixth in 9.36.
Holly said after her success: “I would like to thank my coach, James Coney, for all the support and guidance he has provided over the past few years that has helped me become a national champion.”
