The Hampshire Golf Club ladies landed a home draw in the first round of the national Mail on Sunday competition against Tidworth Garrison GC.

The weather forecast was not at all good when it started on February 17 – but the rain held off until the end.

Toni Prince, first out for the home side, could not avoid defeat – but match two saw Tracy Price win in her first ever match for the club – despite having to play off a lower 24 handicap due to the competition conditions. That levelled the scores.

The away player came good in match three against Julie Dixon, giving Tidworth a 2-1 lead.

But another debutant in match four – Rosemary Parnell – played some excellent golf at times to win 2 and 1, which meant the scores were level at 2-2.

Sue Davis did not disappoint in the final match as she came home with an excellent 3 and 1 win to ensure that the Hampshire GC progressed to the next round with a fine 3-2 victory.

With the strong winds still blowing on Saturday only a few hardy souls ventured out to play the February Stableford competition.

Despite the difficult conditions, there were still one or two very good scores.

Stephen Pyle (5) won with 35 points, Paul Humphrey (12) finished second, also with 35, and Paul Harrison (9) finished third with 34.

The club’s annual Valentine Scramble took place on Sunday and, amazingly, the conditions were very good, with some glorious sunshine.

Eight teams took part in conditions that clubs up and down the country would have been delighted with, given the recent weather they have endured.

And the conditions led to some really excellent scores. In third place, with a net score of 62.1, was the team of Ted Hurdle, Paul Ridge, Nigel Gough and Andrew Seton.

In second place, with a net score of 60.9, were Brian Wise, Roy Harris and Matt Adamson.

The winners, with a tremendous net score of 59.9, were Gareth Hughes, Charlie Hughes, Adrian Talbot and Terry Bone.
