Stunning comeback brings well earned point for Andover Hockey

Winchester III 3 Andover III 3.

Andover pulled off another stunning comeback to rescue a point away at high flying Winchester II in a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Sam Cowley scored a superb individual goal late on to level and complete Andover’s revival after they found themselves three goals down for the second weekend running.

Earlier Cowley and Sam Goacher had both finished from close range before half-time to pin back Winchester’s three goal advantage.

Captain Jamie Hacker said: “I’d prefer us to not giving the opposition such an advantage but I can’t argue with the courage and determination we have shown in our last two matches.

“A point was no less than we deserved and our young side continues to gain confidence and build momentum which is very pleasing.”

The opening exchanges were evenly contested with both sides pressing for the opener but it was the home side that were clinical in finding the net and did so three times in quick succession leaving Andover shell-shocked.

However just as they did last week when they hosted Havant, Andover showed tremendous fight and determination despite their setbacks and by half-time were back in the game.

After the break the game really broke into life and opened up as both sides pushed to find the net resulting in an entertaining end to end contest.

Andover were unfortunate not to level sooner creating a number of good opportunities with some fine hockey and eventually they deservedly levelled when Cowley picked up the ball outside the Winchester area on the break before beating his defender and the keeper before cooly firing into the net sparking wild celebrations.

Both sides had chances to steal all three points but the score remained level and Andover celebrated winning a deserved point.

Tomorrow Andover travel to Blandford hoping to continue their unbeaten run.
