The first two weeks of the season got off to a hesitant start, but produced some very good matches.
In Division 1 the pick was the 5-5 draw between Pumas and previous champions Tigers, who only had two players.
Malcolm Cummins won his three, but Andy Snellgrove, who had a 100 per cent record last year, only won one, losing to both Richard Fettes and Ray Carver.
Hanson B recorded a good 9-1 win over newcomers Hanson Lions with three each for Trevor Whitelock and Eddie Shoemark and for Lions, Zac Hine won his first Division 1 set, beating Graham Audin in five games, while Matt Carter was unlucky to lose to the same player, also in five games.
Newly promoted Hanson D lost 1-9 to a strengthened Hanson C for whom Jamie Smith and newcomer Andy Barnes both won three while Mike Cartridge (Hanson D) played well to beat Gerry Vaughan in four games. Figheldene beat Wallop Wanderers 10-0 and the matches were not close except for the games between Phil Cook and Rob Macey, with Phil just holding on to win 11-6, 8-11, 2-11, 11-3, 11-9.
Hanson C were beaten in a close match by Pumas 3-7. Richard Fettes (Pumas) won three but not before he overcame Andy Barnes 9-11, 14-12, 10-12, 11-6, 7-11.
Pumas also took the doubles in a really tight match, 10-12, 14-12, 11-7, 12-14, 13-15. Hanson Lions second match with Hanson A saw some improvement in form but not the result which ended 0-10. Josh White, Steve Rollason and Peter Henderson all won three.
Division 2 started with a defeat for Test Valley A 0-10 against the very experienced team of 3D’s, with Marie Dyke, Brian Dyke and Nicky Downs all winning three.
However, there were good performances for Test Valley A with Adam Lockington just losing to Nicky Downs, 11-8, 8-11, 11-9, 14-16, 7-11.
The other match saw Hanson F well beaten by Enham 0-10. Patrick Baker, Pete Farmer and Andy Farmer all won three while Peter Chattaway took his opponents to four games in each of his sets, and Val Fox only just lost to Baker, 11-9, 6-11, 9-11, 11-9, 4-11.
Certainly on this showing Enham and 3D’s will be contesting first place in this division.
The pre-season Hard Bat Tournament was concluded last Friday with Ray Carver winning the singles and keeping things in the family.
The doubles title went to Shaun Carver partnered by Zac Hine.
