New pairing wins tennis title
12:00am Wednesday 23rd October 2013 in Sport
The annual Basingstoke League men’s doubles veterans event at Preston Candover Tennis Club attracted the usual good turnout of 12 couples from a variety of clubs.
The pairs were spilt into three groups and the new pairing of Martin Isherwood and Mike Prince (Andover LTC) proved very effective as they won group A.
Things may have been different as they trailed 4-3 to the Preston Candover pairing of Steve Grove and Paul Cook when Cook had to retire due to injury.
Hoss Ashraf and Darren Giddings (Beechdown) secured one victory – over the other pairing, Geoff Mulhern and Richard Hancock (Goodworth Clatford).
Group B saw 2011 champions Chris Wise and Pete Seward (RSF) dominate, only Malcolm McPhail and Paul Byrne (Waverley) providing tough opposition.
Jeff Lill and Trevor Blake (Andover) beat Al Taylor and Ian (Winchester) in their final match.
Group C included six times champions Chris Pearce (Kingsclere) and Paul Rattue (Oakley) who looked on course to win the group after beating Andy Wallace (BDH) and Richard Mole (Preston Candover) and Neil Dainton and Oscar O’Herlihy (Preston Candover).
But Tim Rice and Rex Groves (Totally Tennis) sprung a real surprise by beating the former champions – after several years of trying – and went on to win the group.
In the semi-finals the form of Rex and Tim appeared to dwindle and Chris and Pete came out 6-3 winners to advance to the final.
The other semi saw Isherwood and Prince take on Pearce and Rattue, who came through best losers.
The Andover pair were too consistent for the past winners and won 6-3 in a close match.
The final saw Isherwood and Prince take their first title with a 6-2 success.
In the plate final, McPhail and Byrne beat Lill and Blake 6-3.
