Young athletes do town proud in National Championships
7:40am Wednesday 11th September 2013 in Sport
At the recent National Track and Field Championships Andover AC was proudly represented by Nikko Hunt (U17 pole vault), Matt Chant (U17 400m), Sam Sears (U15 300m) and Holly Mills (U15 75m hurdles and long jump). Reigning English Schools Champion Hunt was slightly disappointed to finish in fifth with 4.20m but is proud to have had a great season. Despite struggling with a niggling hamstring injury Chant progressed from his heat to run a solid sixth in the final and despite being below-par showed huge determination to compete with the best in Great Britain. Sears has had an outstanding summer season and was taking part in his first ever outdoor national championships, He ran well in his heat but was unable to progress to the semi-final. Holly Mills was competing in her first outdoor national championships as a bottom age U15 athlete and produced good performances. Despite the early start she coped well with the conditions in the long jump with all having jumped over 5m to enter and after the round three, when the field was cut to the top eight, Holly wasfourth with a best of 5.12m. Despite three further jumps over 5m she was unable to improve her distance but still finished in a great fifth place.
The 75m hurdles was also a tough competition with a majority having run quicker than Holly this year. She knew she would have to run a PB to have a chance of qualifying and ran her best hurdles race of the year in fourth but this was not enough as she was tenth fastest overall but second fastest of the bottom aged girls.
