First half goals brings joint top place for Andover Town
New Milton Town 0 Andover Town 2.
Andover Town duly went joint top of the Wessex League Division One just a month into their first campaign following a workmanlike victory at previous leaders New Milton Town – the second victory at Fawcett Fields as Town won there in the League Cup last month.
Manager Neil Benson went with the same outfield ten with Jake Wellesley-Davies replacing Michael Weatherall in a pre agreed early season goalkeeper rotation and Cameron Hough back in the squad on the bench.
Wellesley-Davies had little to do but what he did was neat and tidy and his clean sheet was a welcome bonus behind a disciplined defence including the consistent and unfussy Bradley Benson.
Town took an early lead from the penalty spot when Lewis Benson was brought down in the box and Lloyd Foot did he needful and on the half hour man of the match Claudio Herbert cut in from the right and his fine finish matched his build up to make it 2-0.
Herbert was always dangerous on the ball in a very solid team performance and Benson also singled out Oliver Yates as having a good game. “Gunner has now taken on board our work ethic and understands what his role is and is getting better all the time.”
New Milton were rarely in the game and created few chances while Town were far busier and in the second half it began to unravel for the home side as the increasingly frustrated management team went too far with their complaints and the manager was dismissed, as was a home defender late onbut by then the points were secure.
“They sensed that they were getting little and let it show and in the end they had six booked and one sent off” said Benson whose own son Lewis was also cautioned after having been fouled and was immediately substituted with Thursday’s game at Andover New Street firmly in his mind.
“We are very pleased with what are a valuable three points” added Benson “After the Team Solent game I told the team that they needed to go on a run unbeaten and they are doing just that.”
Town will take a full squad to Foxcotte Park for Thursday’s Hampshire Senior Cup tie with Andover New Street, ko 7.30pm.
