Four goal salvo sets up Town youngsters for opening win
Bath City U18 1 Andover Town U18 4.
Andover Town’s sparkling new U18 side began their campaign in the SW Counties Youth League with a stunning victory over Bath City on Saturday morning.
Ron Bertie’s youngsters will not play on a finer stage all season than City’s historic Twerton Park and they did it proud with an emphatic display topped by doubles from Josh Bertie and Ed Chappe.
With only one second year player in a team of 16-year olds Town hit the ground running as the impressive Callum Cunniffe-Pilley linked with Chappe and his cross was tucked away by Bertie midway through the opening half.
City replied and Elliott Gibbons missed a good chance after a defensive error and Town made them pay as Hillary Ndagurwa worked the touchline before setting Cunniffe-Pilley away again and once more Bertie was on hand to tuck away the inch perfect cross on the half hour.
Chappe shot wide then five minutes later Jordan Ricketts, son of former Bath and Yeovil favourite Tony, found Nathan Legge and Gibbons finished the move to make it 2-1.
Five minutes later it was 3-1 as Cunniffe-Pilley was once again involved in a fine move which Chappe ended but City responded well and just on the break Town keeper Mark Childs made a flying save from a Ryan Mitchell free-kick.
City came out battling and after Ricketts had missed from close range and a James Fisher cross had clipped the bar Legge was put through but was denied by a goal saving tackle by McAulie Stubbs, who was immaculate all morning.
Just past the hour Town were safe as substitute Tom Wright fed Chappe who hammered a left footer past home keeper Sam Talbot.
Oli Bailey brought a save out of Talbot late on and the same man denied Wright on the whistle but the points went back to Andover.
Saturday the side take on Bristol Academy at Sparsholt College and with the first team without a game the club invite all supporters to see the SW Counties game which kicks off at 10.30am..
