Final day promotion shoot out at 'Parish
Basingstoke NH II v Longparish.
In this clash between the top two sides in the division, BS&I sponsored Longparish won the toss and, with the threat of rain hanging heavy in the air, opted to field. Basingstoke started slowly and lost their first wicket to a superb running catch by Martin Savage but former Hampshire U19 and Basingstoke and NH 1st XI skipper Russell Droy batted well after a long lay off through injury, but fell to Longparish II stalwart Martin Savage for 31. Chris Clarke took 1-21 from his ten overs but Andy Neal hung around for 49 and Daniel McCormack looked to be back to his best with a stylish 69, but a depleted Longparish attack picked up late wickets to restrict Basingstoke to 218-6, a target adjusted to 195 from 36 overs following rain. At 71 without loss in the 11th over Longparish looked to be cruising, but Paul Blackmore was bowled by Bob Bowen for 30 and Adam Lister was adjudged leg before a few balls later, quickly followed by Alex Coetzee. At the other end William de Cani looked to have matters in hand and seemed untroubled by all that was thrown his way until a slower ball by Lewis Benge induced an athletic catch by Dan McCormack at mid on.
Confusion followed with a series of run outs, one contentious and one bizarre that involved a runner, but with 24 balls to go Longparish required a run a ball for victory and the league title. Matt Jackman marshalled the tail superbly, but was unbeaten on 33 as Longparish closed two runs short with one wicket remaining; In the final game of the season tomorrow, Longparish face Winterslow at home where a win will secure the league title and all support is welcome.
