Tilling returns to Combe with ease
Simon Tilling has not raced in every round of this year’s Castle Combe Sport and GT Championship, due to their being little strong competition for the Vernham Dean racer in his Radical SR3 T. Simon's last race was at Brands Hatch where he had a gear box fault so with that fixed, Combe's Bank Holiday Raceday was the prefect place to shakedown the new parts. As the cars went out for qualifying Tilling topped the time sheet, 3.8 seconds ahead of the second place driver. With the sunny weather the track was too hot for Simon to set his aim of getting around the 1.85 mile track in under 60 seconds. For once he made a great start, leading the pack into the famous Quarry Corner and at some points on the circuit Simon was hitting over 160 mph which is not easy when there are slower cars competing in the same race. Tilling won by more than 32 seconds, also not surprisingly setting the fastest lap. Simon will win the Class A championship this year but will have to wait another year to lift the overall title again.
Also at the same meeting Andover builder Ray Ferguson was out for the second weekend running having raced at Thruxton in front of his home crowd. This time Ray’s Ferrari Mondial T was entered in the Pirelli Ferrari Formula Classic series. Ray started from 14th on the grid, after a race battle with three others finished in a creditable 11th.
