Undefeated Andover Tennis Men retain title
Andover Lawn Tennis Club’s Men’s A and B teams concluded their 2013 summer programme with two decisive victories. The A team’s victory, captained by Andy Moraghan, meant they retained their title, were undefeated and had only dropped four sets all season With several regulars not available, they hosted Old Basing A in a Division 1 match, with Mike Prince paired with Jeff Lill and Andrew Winnett with debutant Jacob Webb.
Prince and Lill won all four sets quite comfortably and Winnett and Webb won three out of four. Webb, demonstrating plenty of sound tennis shots, benefitted from the guidance of his experienced doubles partner in the 7-1 win.
The B team, similarly, had to provide a scratch team but were still able to field a couple of useful pairs against local rivals Goodworth Clatford B. Hallam Doney and Sam Birks had little difficulty in winning all four of their sets, dropping only six games. Lill and his regular Vets partner John Snowden, had an easy win over Goodworth Clatford’s second pair, as their opponents struggled to cope with the speedy surface. They then took the first set 6-2 against the first pair before their opponents fought back to take the second set to a tie-break which proved an even contest until Snowden finished it off with a viciously spinning ace. The 8-0 victory ensured the B team’s survival in a very competitive Division 2; while probably condemning Clatford to relegation.
