Andover vaulter Nikko heading for the heights
12:01pm Tuesday 6th August 2013 in Sport
Following his gold medal winning performance at the recent English Schools Track and Field Championships Andover AC's Nikko Hunt was selected to compete for England Schools at the annual SIAB international held in Dublin. This event sees the winners of national school track and field championships from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland compete for the title of UK champion. Nikko has been in great form this season smashing personal bests and long established club records on a regular basis so hopes were very high for a medal. He showed what a professional athlete he is under pressure to take a well deserved silver medal just missing out on gold through count back. Both Nikko and the winner (England's Charlie Myers) cleared 4.20m, skipped 4.30m and then cleared 4.30m. Both then skipped 4.50m and went for a huge leap of 4.60m and failed but Nikko was very close on two of his three attempts. This was Nikko's first international and is even more special considering the talented athlete is bottom of the U17 age group and has another year to compete at this level. The team were treated to a great experience flying to Dublin and receiving an England tracksuit and competition kit. The last member of Andover AC to compete at this level was Phill Berntsen more than five years ago and shows the magnitude of the performance considering Phill went on to compete for Great Britain a number of times.
