HAMPSHIRE star Alex Danson ended the London 2012 Games with a personal honour as well as a bronze medal in the women’s hockey tournament.

The Southampton -born striker, who started her career at Trojans, netted GB’s opening goal in their 3-1 bronze medal play-off success against New Zealand.

As a result, she finished as the tournament’s joint top scorer with five goals – the same as team-mate Christa Cullen.

Reflecting on the tournament, Danson, below, said: “We gave everything.

“The bronze became our gold and we wouldn’t come away with anything less.”

Cullen hopes the team’s medal-winning success has a positive boost for the sport. We want this to be a legacy. We want it to encourage more people to play hockey,” she remarked.

It was only the second Olympic medal the GB women had ever won, matching the feat of the Barcelona 1992 bronze medallists.
