ROB Collard recovered from his worst qualifying of the season, to claim a podium in race two at Rockingham, in the latest rounds of the British Touring Car Championship.

The Hook racer suffered like all the West Surrey Racing BMW’s with electrical problems in Saturday’s qualifying which was held in torrential rain, thunder and lightning.

Come race day on Sunday the sun was out, but Collard from 27th had a lot of work to do and in race one managed to get up to 14th in his first outing.

Race two then proved to be the high spot of the weekend as Collard made the most of some bunching up at the first corner and moved up into seventh place.

By lap eight he was four seconds behind the top three, but four laps he was right up behind third placed man Mat Jackson and then overtook him to claim another podium for the season, with team mate Sam Tordoff winning the race.

The reverse grid for race three saw Collard start from fifth and in the end had to settle for sixth.

This leaves him fifth in the drivers’ championship 31 points behind leader Tordoff with six races to go.

Collard’s son Jordan had a solid weekend in the Ginetta Junior Championship, one of the support races of the BTCC.

Collard was 16th in his first outing and then 11th in his second race (fourth in the rookie class), before coming in 12th in race three.

The pair are next in action at Silverstone on the weekend of September 17/18.

However, before this both will be supporting Rob’s oldest son Ricky as the Formula Three Championship leader heads to Donington Park this weekend before for the final races of his championship.
